

The Almoravids rose to power by gaining control of the gold caravan route from Ghana through the Sahara. They established their capital at Marrakesh built to rival Seville in Al Andaluz. They came to Spain at the invitation of individual Taifas to settle disputes and then had a major role in the wars against the Christians.
They wre succeeded by the Almohads in Morocco who had their capital at Fez.
